Message From The President

Mary Ellen Waltemire, PCCMary Ellen Waltemire, PCC

“You cannot be all things to all people. Be unique. Be different. Give to others what you want yourself. And do what you were made to do!”

~ Anonymous

Be unique…

Coaching is exactly where we all need to be! What an incredible career to be part of as our community and everyone in it continues to change and evolve. As active practitioners, we recognize the benefits of coaching. During the recent International Coaching Week in mid-May, we highlighted the coaching successes of our volunteers in their work with Turnaround Tuesday, ICF-Maryland Chapter’s outreach effort. Thanks to the many volunteers who coach tirelessly in support of so many Baltimore City clients. This is a unique approach that’s making a significant difference.

Be different…

We recently received word from ICF Global that our member retention rate is 77%, which compares favorably to the current Global retention rate of 67%. We appreciate your choice to renew your ICF membership and identify Maryland Chapter as your affiliate. ICF Maryland is different in lots of ways – most importantly in the value that we offer members through the range of professional development offerings that provide CCEUs, reduced fees for Chapter events, a wide range of leadership opportunities, and a warm, supportive culture that encourages quality connections among coaches.

Give to others what you want yourself…

I want to have fun, be challenged, and be involved in something where I can make a difference. I choose to give time, energy, and passion to share leadership of OUR chapter, which more importantly is YOUR chapter. ICF Maryland offers a wide range of opportunities for involvement – and to make a difference. I hope you were able to join me this month for the next Conversation with the President, on Wednesday, June 20th from 8 a.m. – 9:15 a.m. when we discussed ways you can participate in our chapter.

And do what you were made to do…

Congratulations on your choice to be a coach!

I’ll look forward to meeting and to connect with YOU at an upcoming ICF Maryland Chapter event!

Yours in leadership,

Mary Ellen
ICF-Maryland Chapter President

Want to Make Connections and Learn from Others?

Get Involved – I’m Glad I Did!!!

by Wanda J. Campbell, Ph.D., PCC
Communications Chair

In January of 2016, I joined ICF Maryland. At that time, I didn’t know anyone, and I was still relatively new to coaching. So when someone approached me about serving on one of the Chapter’s committees, I readily agreed. This turned out to be an excellent decision. I previously had been a Newsletter Editor for another organization, so taking on this role was a good fit.

Right from the start, I was welcomed into the group. Before long, I had made friends with my colleagues on the committee and had people to sit with at ICF Maryland events. Then we began talking outside of our meetings and events. I now had a supportive community of people with whom I can discuss challenges and share ideas.

My closest coaching friends have been made through ICF Maryland. I’ve learned a lot and hopefully have been able to help others as well.

Getting involved does not have to be a major commitment. The Chapter has many small ways to “dip your toe in the water.” What skills do you have that you would like to share? What do you like to do? What would you like to learn?

You don’t need to wait to be asked to participate. Approach any of the members on the Board. We can connect in person or by email. Together we can find something that matches your interests.

I look forward to seeing you and/or hearing from you. Feel free to email me at

Meeting Clients Where They Are – the Adult Development Coaching GPS

by Joy Goldman, RN, MS, PCC
& Petra Platzer, PhD, PCC

If you’ve ever used the wrong approach with a client, you’ll remember the vivid feeling that almost equates to a surgeon operating on the wrong limb. That feeling lives on in you as a mistake you’d like not to repeat. In our application of the Leadership Maturity Framework and Adult Development Theory, we’ve created a GPS: a tool to navigate your client’s level of making meaning that helps you to customize your coaching approach to where they live.

New Pricing Policy for Business Development Programs

Message from the ICF Maryland Board

As many of you have undoubtedly noticed, the quality of the Business Development programs has continued to rise over time. This is because we have responded to the feedback we have received from attendees.

Based on data from a survey of attendees, earlier this year, we have developed a slate of programs and are identifying expert presenters to reflect requests to provide “business relevant” coaching practices and actionable strategies for coaches. The programming from May through November is a “prototype program” which will allow us to obtain “real-time” feedback on what works and what we can do to make things even better.

Beginning in July, we will begin charging attendees for Business Development program sessions. The rates appear below, followed by the program plan to enable you to make the decision that is best for you.

  • $20 per session
  • $80 for 6 sessions (savings of $40)

Guests Who Join as Partners

  • $75 Partner fee + $20 per session
  • $155 for Partner fee and 6 sessions (Savings of $55 over Guest Rate)

You may start frantically thinking you need to explain how your business works, your approach, and specialty, create interest in the person you’re speaking with AND communicate your value so they’re willing to pay you what you’re worth. (or maybe you just freeze up!)

That’s a LOT of pressure… but there IS a better way. What if you could communicate the value of what you do quickly, concisely and confidently?

In this workshop-style presentation, participants will:

  • Create an introduction that clearly communicates your value, and immediately gets an ideal client’s attention so they say, “I need you!”

  • Collaboratively explore smart strategies to leverage your introduction and create magnetic marketing to attract great clients everywhere: in person, on the web, social media, in print and more.

Learn how to skyrocket your business by adding a simplified client generation system designed to double your income and cut your work hours in half.

Mary Cravets is a Client Generation Expert and International Speaker who works with driven, busy coaches around the world to help them fill their practices with great clients without working nights and weekends. Using her methods, the majority of her clients quickly increase their income 50-100%.

Thanks to the freedom her proven business systems afford her, Mary spends much of her time focused on family with her husband, Adam, on the beautiful central coast of California. She’s also an avid roller coaster enthusiast and a kayaking volunteer for a wildlife protection program in Morro Bay.
